Fellas,
I am considering installing a coolant bypass filter. It seems to be a very popular mod. What are the benefits of having a coolant filter?? Are their any other prefered mods over this one to help increase longevity? I am also interested an in oil bypass filter, but i've read that it is not really necesary if you change oil on a 4-5K interval.
This is how the truck sits now,
2005 F250 6.0 123,000 Miles
APR Studs/Head Gasket upgrade
EGR block off
4" Turbo back exhaust
stock air filter
5w-40 synthetic (5K intervals)
SCTX3-DP Tuner 80HP Econo Tune
Everything else is stock...
I put the coolant filter on first. After reading about the oil cooler plugging. Thought about oil by pass, but I get oil changes every 3k. I have been just watching my truck these past 6 months and now feel the best next mod for me is the CCV reroute mod. My cac tubing is weeping from the oil coming out of the CCV. Oh, I deleted the cat at the beginning also.
Coolant filter is a must have IMO. If you do not have one, your oil cooler is acting as your filter. You have 123000 miles on your truck. My oil cooler went at 116000 miles. I now have a coolant filter. It is important to know your oil temp and coolant temp and the difference between them. 15 degrees is the FMC trigger for warranty replacement of the oil/egr coolers. The Edge Insight monitor works great for this and other critical parameter watching. I recommend putting one on your " I want it" list. Although the oil bypass filter is nice, it has been posted here that oil analysis done by some that have it saw no statistically relative difference in their analysis results. The oil begins to shear on the 6.0 at 5000 or so and the bypass filter will not help that. I deleted the egr system. Have fun
Hey,
Have you changed the filter for the coolant since you've installed it? If so, have you tore into to see if it caught much debree? Which filter did you install? I am looking at the one that dieselensite makes.
One more thing, forgive my ignorance. I understand that the coolant system is a closed loop system that keeps engine components cool and that the fluid is moved around by using a water pump. So what components are being protected by the use of this filter other than the pump? Also, does this filter have any impacto on electrolysis? I assume you would have to use some king of additive for this..

Sorry to go on a tangent here, but i am also looking at getting an Edge Insight monitor. The input into the monitor is from the PCM, correct? Just curious, because I see that the "tuner boys" recommend using analog guages so you get a true reading and that the PCM may not always be accurate...whats your opinion? I prefer to not mess with the analog gauges and if i get the insight I will get the EGT probe.
I cut open my first filter at 300 miles to see what was in there. A little bit of sand, all in all, not much. I plan my next filter change at next oil change, which will then have 3,000 on it. I went ahead and bought 4 filters from Dieselsite when I bought the system. I made my own "ball check" valves with parts from local plumbing store. Cheaper than the ones from Dieselsite. I have read where some people don't change the filters until the flow stops going back into the degas bottle. Which does not hurt anything when it stops.
Heard about filters that have something added to them, but wont use them. Just get the ones from Deiselsite.
By the looks of my degas bottle when I bought the truck (it had 28,000 on it) there was black grit all over the bottom. I removed it and cleaned as much of the crap out. If that is what is plugging the oil cooler, I'm glad I bought the filter!
Every component in the cooling system is being protected from the casting debris coursing through the engine. The oil cooler is the usual culprit in the first to fail race. I am not a chemist so I do not know about the electrolysis issues. I bought the Dieselsite setup and am quite happy. My first filter was completely blocked in 350 miles. The second one went 1000. The third one is still filtering.
The Edge Insight gets all its data except EGT from the OBD port under the dash. The EGT requires an Edge EGT probe be installed in the exhaust manifold. This is not too difficult. Make sure you select the Edge EGT probe in the setup menu or you will get a N/A on the EGT screen. As far as accuracy, the dealer gets this same data when they scan your truck with their very expensive and proprietary diagnostic tools. If this info is accurate enough for factory diagnostics, it is good enough for me. Keep in mind that the 6.0 trucks do not have fuel pressure readings available through the PCM. You need to install a dedicated fuel pressure gauge for that reading. I installed an ISSPRO EV2 gauge for that.
I set up page 2 on my Insight to monitor ECT/EOT as a bar graph. 1 button push and I can see at a glance the difference between them. 1 more button push and back to main screen. I monitor EGT, trans temp, boost and ect on page 1. Did I say how much I like my Insight?
Buy a couple extra filters when you order it. I didn't and now have to pay shipping again to get another filter.
I only ordered one with my kit, I now go to the international dealer and buy them for about $9 a piece, tax and all. They're fleetgaurd part# WF-2077.
To respond to the OP I am glad I purchased one, I recently changed my first filter w/ 1500 mi on it. I drained it and cut it open and I'd say there was probably about 1-2 teaspoons of casting sand in it. Trucks only has 49K mi on it. Keep in mind that International recalled all their VT365s and outfitted them with coolant filters for relibility purposes.
You want the non-SCA filters. Also, your money would be better spent on a fuel pressure gauge and an Insight or analog gauges instead of an oil bypass system. Just my .02
