I thought it would be nice to try and fire up the engine in my project to see if it would run before I pulled it. Since the condition of the the 302 is unknown I pulled the plugs and tried rotating the crank with a socket on the crank pulley. I can get 1 revolution before I hit a hard stop, same spot either direction. Any ideas before I just decide to pull it and rip into it? Stuck lifter?
I pulled the valve covers and couldn't see much since I can only get 1 revolution out of it. I can see all 8 pistons moving through the plug holes. I decided to rip into it when the snow bank melts behind it and I can roll it into the garage. I pulled the fan, distributor, carb, alt, and all the plumbing...ready to pull and mount on the engine stand. The average temp here through March is around 36. I hate waiting.
When you pulled the plugs were there any that showed any signs of rust? if so then that cylinder might have a spot in it. Although, typically when its a cylinder rusted up you dont likely get any rotation at all. I'm leaning more towards a valve being stuck open.
As you said it might be hard to see while trying to rotate it by hand. Try tapping on each of the valves to see if they are all free.
If you do find one that is stuck you might be able to free it up by rotating it and tapping on it and applying rust penetrant, etc.
