I live in california, and im not aware of what laws apply to me swapping in a diesel engine into a ford pre 1975. how does one go about doing all the dmv paperwork to meke it street legal.
Yup, no smog inspections for '75 and earlier gas engines, or for '97 and earlier diesel engines.
But if this was a '76 and newer truck, which required smog checks, then you would have to take it to a "referee," which is a state licensed inspector. If he agrees that you followed all the laws that deal with swapping engines, then he will issue a certificate and update the DMV records to show that your truck is now diesel powered.
The only thing that I know about the laws are that; older engines can't be installed in newer vehicles, no heavy duty engines can be installed in light duty chassis, and all oem emissions equipment from the engine and the chassis must be kept. This is just what I've read, but I've never actually done a swap, so I'm sure there's more to it. Try the DMV website.
Since your '75 doesn't need smog, most guys just leave it alone and don't bother with the DMV.
