Is this a common problem

Hey everyone. Is it a common issue on the 7.3L engines to have the 2 bolts on both sides of the engine that clamp the turbo-up pipes to the exhaust manifold to corrode and snap. I currently have a slight exhaust leak that is noticable under moderate to heavy acceleration. Bought new bolts and nuts, am going to drill out the old bolts and replace with a 3in bolt, lock washer and nut. I want to get it fixed ASAP because i know any type of exhaust leak before the turbo is taking away boost, which can kill fuel mileage and power. Just wondering if its a common problem and wondering if anybody else has run into this problem. Its an easy fix in my opinion. Thinking about taking some pics as i go through the process. Thanks

Our 1997 F250 with 235,000 miles does not have have exhaust leaks.

But with those temps and the quality of bolts used in the 1990's leads me to believe anyone trying to take out those bolts without a some luck and a good feel on how a bolt feels when it twists in half will have a snapped off bolt.

I think the best thing to do would be replacing the bolts that will resist the heat .... stainless?

Stainless is susceptible to Chloride Stress Cracking and has too much thermal growth.

A better alloy would be monel or hastelloy or even inconel.

I have welded inconel and hastaloy and I know they are expensive metals.
If you have a Fastenal in your area you may ask the about what bolts can take exhaust heat. They should know, they deal in all kinds of bolts.

What size are those bolts? I can talk to a Fastenal rep tomorrow... I need to change mine too...

Also, what size are the up-pipe to Y-collector bolts? May as well replace them too!

Don't know, but I tried the local hardware stores for those bolts on an 02 and the didn't quite fit. I ended up going back to Ford to buy those bolts. Surprisingly in stock and fairly reasonable for a Saturday.
