Transmission service question

I'm trying to find out if the torque converter on a 98 Expedition with the 5.4 l engine and transmission has a drain plug. I want to drain as much fluid as possible and change the filter. Also how difficult is it to do.

Thanks

it should have a drain plug. you will see it if its in the right position. i was going to do the same thing, but. if you change the filter and drain all the trans fluid in the pan you get about 5-6 quarts out of it. my transmission holds 16.4 quarts. so i decided to have ford do it for $79 and they would do a true flush. it would have cost my about $50 in parts and fluid and not as good as they could do with their tools. 2001 eddie expo 4X4

Transmission service question

I was assured today that My '98 5.4 has a drain plug. I will let you know tomorrow as I am changing mine then. Picked up 17 quarts and a filter kit today. Would have had Ford do it, but I have several other things I am doing while I am under there, so just opted to do it myself - as usual.

Once you get the truck up on jack stands look on the botton of the bell housing under the area of the torque converter. You should see an inspection plate held in place with a couple of screws. Once removed you should be able to see the torque converter. On its exterior curcumference you will find a drain plug. Have someone else bump the starter until the plug is pointed down, remove it and drain away. Expect quite a bit more fluid than you found in the pan (about 10-12 quarts). When you are finished and restart the engine make sure you shift through all gears (with foot firmly on the brake) and recheck the fluid level before you takt the truck back on the road.

Four-wheel Drive? While you are down there drain and refill the transfer case. Uses the same fluid you will put in the transmission.
