Gasket for water pump

Hi gang,

Geting ready to put the rebuilt water pump back on, so I can move the truck in and out of the garage to work on it. Question is this: Should I just put the gasket on, or should I use like a permatex type of stuf with it.

thanks

JimG 1098 ( 279 v8, OHV )

Just to back this up, use the red stuff WITH the water pump gasket - not instead of the gasket!

Tee hee. Hope I didn't sound like I was being insulting. On my truck, the PO used that stuff instead of gaskets. It worked pretty well, except every place it leaked!

Another question: Directions say to spread a bead of it, and the hand tighten. Let dry and finish tighten.

This is the permatex, red stuff. any one ever do it like that.

I'm puting in the water pump.

Thanks,

I've done it both ways. They want to make sure you don't squeeze it all out between two high spots so there isn't enough to seal.

I've also used stuff that doesn't dry! (or harden).

Personally I prefer the old standard, Indian Head Gasket Shellac, for water pumps. It will stick a gasket on like glue, great for positioning, but seals against water very effectively with only a very thin layer. It is alcohol-soluble (when it gets on your fingers).

If by chance you need another 279 waterpump gasket...

EAD8507A =

PARK MOTOR CO. in Fairmont MN has 6 = 507-235-6681.

MILLER OBSOLETE PARTS in Binghamton NY has 7 = 800-546-7278.

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 22 = 800-543-4959.

ANTIQUE AUTO SUPPLY in Arlington TX has 25 = 817-275-2381.

Yeah, that's the stuff I was talking about, just couldn't remember the name at the time. I have a jar on the shelf I use for most of my gaskets.

I also prefer the shellac type sealants, however, if the mating surfaces are in good condition, I don't think sealant is very necessary. Usually, I will use sealant on only one surface and apply a thin coat of antifreeze or oil on the other side of the gasket to soften it up a bit. This way I can easily take things apart again and often reuse the old gasket.
