towing capabilities

Is my 1979 f-150 capable of towing a 1950 f-1 300 miles with a U-haul tow dolly?

My truck has 40,000 original miles, a 351m, a c6 auto, a 2.75 ford 9" rear, and a stock step bumper. I also recently tuned up the truck.

I am guessing that I can put a 2" ball on the bumper and go right?

I don't know about the tow dolly but the truck will do fine as long as you got good brakes I had the same set up 400m with c6 and high gears would do good a little slow on take off but would cruise dow the road with a trailer and car on the back. check with u-haul you will need a place for safty chains to hook to your bumper also does the tow dolly have lights if so you may have to wire your truck for them get the stuff at walmart for the lights and saftey chains if your bumper has 3 holes in it like mine did I would go buy 2 quick links and put them in the outside holes for the saftey chains to hook into...

I'd be a bit nervous using a hitch on the bumper especially towing another truck.

Check with the Towing forum for more info.

Ditto on Enduro's comment. A bumper setup is totally inadequate. Very unsafe and a danger to anyone on the road with you. If a cop see's your rig he may stop you.

I thought that the bumper was rated at 3500 pounds.

the truck with the dolly should weigh no more than 3600 pounds
(the truck only consists of sheetmetal, frame, motor and tranny)

does this change your view of things or do you still think that the bumper is inadequate.

the trip will be 240 miles on flat interstate and I figured on going about 45 mph the whole way.

actully talk to u-haul they know the laws of your area and will tell you if you can use it on a bumper or if you need a reciver hitch I know when I moved my freind I rented a little trailer (enclosed) it hooked to the bumper I wanted a bigger trailer but they said I needed a reciver hitch before they would let me rent a bigger one
they don't want there stuff tore up they have strick rules they will let you know.

as far as the bumper it's strong enough for little stuff like that I have for years pulled with bumper only and never had a problem but I didn't get crazy on the weight when I started hauling heavy stuff I would reinforce my bumpers I have a reese hitch and it jars the heck out of my truck un like the bumper and goose neck set ups my 2 cents call u-haul

the bumper on my 79, and 78 both were made out of 5/16" plate from the hitch location, to the frame, and are very solid. i welded a 2 1/2" reciver to the bottom of my bumper, and have towed many things with it, from a ski-doo trailer, to a tandum float and a '56 JD 420 crawler with a 6 way blade (6500 lbs + 1800lbs trailer)
