I need some help with these starters

I have 3 late model Y starters that should be able to make one good unit. However, I dont know how to get the Bendix removed . Have done it 2 or 3 times before, but apparently on earlier starters, where all that needed to be done was to collapse the spring at the end and remove the pin. On these I can see half of the pin, but cant get anything to move so the pin is fully exposed and removable. The end spring is apparently fully enclosed in a metal cover. Checked my Motor's Repair Manuals for '64 and '74, but nothing. It has to be something simple!

So far it looks like each starter has a different problem. One had the Bendix beat to death by a hammer (???, but not me), one the armature is badly bent (how does that happen), and on the last one the brass bushing in the block side aluminum housing has been loose and spinning until it wore out the housing bore.

Not knowing what else to do I turned to violence. Selected the Bendix that had been hammered up and removed the metal shell off of the end where older units have a large exposed spring, with a grinder. Under the shell was a thick rubber band 1/2 in. wide and 3/8 thick. Pulled out the rubber and everything collapsed, pin dropped out and Bendix pulled off.

So, the shielded rubber had to be compressed. Put two vice grips on one side of a good Bendix, and with a lot of force got it to collapse enough to remove pin.
