Flashes are when the dealer will reprogram the ficm, pcm, tcm with the latest updates. You do not necessarily need them done. The newest flash does help with cold start issues. It costs anywhere from $80-$100 depending on your dealer.
To a certain extent Yes. If you go to the dealer and ask for a flash (or calibration update) they will update your FICM (Fuel Injection Control MODULE), PCM (Powertrain Control MODULE) and TCM (Transmission Control MODULE)....get the MODULE theme? If there are updates available (there may be or not), then they will be updated when the flash occurs. I had mine done recently at my dealer for only $32.00.
