Front Differential Capacity

Hi all, I have a (hopefully) simple question. I am preparing to change the fluids in my 02 Ex 4X4. The front diff holds 6 pints according to my local Ford dealer, but my Amzoil guy told me he looked it up and it stated only 4 pints. Who is right?? Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

From the Owner's Manual:
1.8L (3.8 pints) of Motorcraft SAE 75W-90 "Premium 4x4 Front Axle Lubricant"

3.8 US pints = 1.9 US quarts

My 05 manual say 3.6 pints, so 3.6 or 3.8 you will be covered with 4 pints or 2 quarts.

4 pints is right - so buy 2 quarts of 75w90 and you're good. I used Amsoil in mine as well - Severe Gear Synthetic. Add to just under the fill opening and you're good. Make sure to clean the old gasket off and use good sealant to make a new one.

Is there a drain plug for the front diff or do you have to pullthe cover like the rear? I'd look, but mine will not fit in garage and it is curently -2 F here.

You need to pull the cover which makes it a bit of a pain - mainly from the drying time before you can torque the cover back down and go driving!

My local Ford dealer told me not to use anything to adhere the gasket to the diff/cover. He said to just use the gasket "dry". Everywhere else I look it seems people say to use RTV or equivilent sealant with the gasket, any opinions? Thanks again!

I'm not aware of a gasket being used - I know it didn't have one when I took it apart. I did have to scrape RTV off the housing and cover and I used the RTV front and rear before putting it all back together.

I think the Ford Dealer is right, not the owners manual, I just changed all the Fluids in my Ex and I found that 6 pints was closer to what I actually used on my 01
