So im up at college as a freshman and i am lucky enough to have my truck with me. Well the other day i hopped in my truck and went down the hill and popped her down into 2nd then 1st. (I do this every so often with no adverse affects) but this was the first time i had done it withing 5 minutes of start up. Anyway, i got to the stop sign at the bottom and it was running like ***** so i popped it up into nuetral and reved it up and it cleared right up (think i flooded it) anyway on my way to autozone the CEL came on and i knew it was gonna be a missfire or lean on bank one. and sure enought the reader at autozone said lean on bank one. well here is my question. I asked the guy to clear the code for me and he said he couldn't. He said it was against company policy and if they werent a certified repair facility they werent allowed to clear it. Is this true? my Autozone back home has ALWAYS cleared my CEL when i ask, witch i like since i dont have to reprogram my radio after unpluging the batery. But is this true? Are they not allowed to clear codes?
There was a lady on here with the same issue with A-zone. I'm sure if you had a buddy in there he'd do it for you. It depends on the guy you get, but I wouldn't doubt if that it's policy at all. Everybody is trying to avoid any liability if they can.
If you can afford it, spring $60 for a code reader and you can clear them yourself without having to pull the battery cable.
see thats what i dont get though.. i dont know anyone in the store back home and they still did it... they must not have cared to much either way.. and your right i do need a reader. im kinda wanting to get a tuner that has the reader capability, but funds are a little to short for that.lol. as for my enging ive got the 4.6. when my truck rolled off of the assembly line i dont know if the 5.4s were even in production yet. mine was made in june of 96 so shes got some age to her.lol
Google for a code reader and get a cheap model to hold you over until you can afford to upgrade to what you really want. Then put it in the tool box and you'll have that little piece of mind with it.....
If your in CA, that's store policy brought on by 'STATE' pressure.
It's not what Autozone wants because they want to sell parts.
For you, why are you down shifting like that?
It serves no good purpose unless in a special application such as towing a heavy load down hill for the extra braking control.
You must understand that cold fluids produce higher pressures and not always a good thing to push your luck.
As far as flooding; no. It's fuel injection. Closed throttle (tps) closes down FI as well as the road speed signal. If an injector hangs open cold then you have an issue with a cylinder.
At closed throttle, the IAC is just kept open enough to prevent the motor from stalling. This is normal action.
Doing cold starts does result in higher FI injection rates as a normal consequence of cold starting until the motor begins to heat.
The OX sensors take over fuel control about 45 seconds after the motor is started unless overridden by the PCM for cold start. That can last many minutes depending what the ambient temp is at the start of the sequence. (the cold start is first sensed at the time you move the ignition switch to 'run' before cranking) the coolant sensor value is looked at and tells the computer to enter the cold start routine.
Starting a motor in cold ambients and driving off actually retards the total system rate of heating by at least two ways.
The cooling system has air forced through the radiator in addition to the fans and the trans takes longer to come up to temp being cooled by the loop in the radiator even though the thermostat is in control of the heating cycle..
You affect things you have no idea about by the way you drive.
downshifting saves brakes. my dad regularly downshifts instead of using brakes and we have to change the brakes in my moms car twice before we change them once in my dads.
