I have a 1993 Bronco with the 5.0L and E4OD transmission. Lately the torque convertor has started disengaging at highway speeds for about 1-2 seconds...then it locks back up. This only occurs at cruise above 50 mph on level road. Going up a hill it never does this. It almost seems to have something to do with the position of the accelerator pedal. If i move the acelerator while this occurs it seems to lock back up quicker.....
No check engine light....and the overdrive on/off light is not flashing. Transmission performs flawlessly otherwise. Shifts good and torque converer engages around 32 mph light throttle without any shudder, etc. Around town it operates as normal. But after 5 miles or so on the highway it starts "hunting". (i.e. RPM's increase from 1800 to 2000....back and forth @ 60mph)
Lastly....the truck does have 262K miles....original motor and trans. I posted this last because everybody so far as soon as i mention mileage immediately says "Oh....its worn out then. Get a new one." I realize it is rather high mileage...but it has been cared for well. As good as it shifts and operates otherwise I can't foresee this problem being something other than electrical.
Wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem...or could help me out before I.... heaven forbid.... have to take it to a shop.
Sorry for the long post. Most of my searching has come up with shudder, poor shifting, etc being accompanied with transmission failure. I have none of these.
Thanks for the response. It turns out that I had a bad throttle position sensor. Transmission is fine. I replaced the sensor and she is back to good as new. While I had the throttle body off I gave it a good cleaning also. This was the first time the throttle body had been removed so you can imagine the gunk that was up in there.
