I'm new to this site and have a question about casting numbers.I have a 460 that i just disassembled for a rebuild and was wondering if it is worth it? The block # is DIVE-AA and the head #'s are D2VE-AA. Thanks to all that can help.
The block is from a 1971 Lincoln and the heads are from a 1972 Lincoln. They are all worth rebuilding but if you are looking for something high performance 1970 and before are it. The differance is the heads have higher compression after 1970. There are also valve size differances 1970 and below. I run a 1972 460 in my pick-up and she has plenty power for me. But I am not a speed freak and It also scares me enought just to watch the gas gauge quikly fall towards the "E". I ran the DOVE heads on my last hopped up 460 and I could pop drive shafts out of the rear.
High compression (75-78cc combustion chambers) 385 heads were made '68-71. Valve sizes are the same for all standard production 385 heads excepting CJ/SCJ (DOOE-R), PI (D20E-AB) and EFI (E3?).
Any of the heads can be used with different compression height on the pistons to provide whatever c/r you want.
I would personally can the D2 heads as they are the only open-chambered head made for the 385. Others have used them without problems, so you'll have a difference of opinion on that. D3VEs, with pedestal lifter mounts same as the D2s are plentiful, cheap and have a semi-closed 92-96cc chamber. DI, DO, C9, C8 heads, with the smaller combustion chambers, are preferred as it's simple to convert their rail rockers to adjustable for lifter pre-load with a locking nut on the studs.
The DIVE-AA block is a good one, should have the beefier main bearing webs.
