You beat me to it Cheezit!!!

Just last week, I had a 2000 Excursion in for a weird issue. The truck would randomly crank the starter uncommanded, even when the engine was already running!!! That one scratched my head for a bit too, and sure enough, when I pulled the GEM out, some water poured out with it. Too bad the part was obsolete, so we had to send it out to be fixed.

Um... Master Old Cheeze and Master Chan...

I should have mentioned that my comment re electronic failures do not apply to "abuse" or "neglect".....

Like your cell phone is not warranted to operate after it goes through the washer / dryer.

Merry Christmas, good friends!

I don't know why my truck is different than yours but you really need to find those shift relays. I've replaced/swapped mine a couple of times in the last couple of years and it always fixes it. Did you get a picture of that area under the hood of your truck? I know there are relays there that control trailer battery charging and lights etc.

The GEM/CJB are one entire assembly. In other words, the interior fuse panel under the steering column is all one piece with the module. And no, it isn't always a very quick and easy "plug the machine in and it will tell you what's wrong with it" type of scenario to diagnose. There are pinpoint tests to follow, circuits to check etc. As in the case of my previous post, I had to try and isolate the component that was supplying voltage to the START circuit uncommanded, which in this case turned out to be the GEM module (I guess water is a good conductor).

Alpine, I've said this before. The relays you are looking for are two identical relays by themselves in a relay box. There is nothing else in the box. These are the relays you need to check out.

When I first went looking for my relays, I found that the box I was looking for had come loose and fallen down the firewall and was hanging by the wires. Look around for it, it is there.

In what year did the GEM go away and get replaced by the 4WD control module, the VSM, etc? I thought it was prior to 2003.

Here is a picture of what looks to me like a newer 6.0L. Maybe this is what alpine8181 has. It would be nice if one of the master techs let us know where the relays are on a truck like this.
