I have a 223 1960 f-100 it has a screw on type oil filter.
my question is whats the difference between the canister type and the screw on? is one larger than the other? can it hold more oil?
Canister type has a replaceable element inside a reuseable housing. They're typically messier than simply removing and replacing the screw on style, and more prone to leaking.
I've got a canister filter on my ****** pickup with 226 Super Hurricane engine... from what I've found these old engines really don't care what type of filter is on them. A lot of really early engines didn't even have filters.
A benefit to your truck having a screw on oil filter is you've got a pressure valve in the bottom of the filter that's supposed to hold oil in it, so your engine doesn't dry start when you crank it up first thing in the morning. The canister doesn't have anything like that to my knowledge.
Both the canister and an FL1A sized oil filter (which do you use?) should hold a really close amount of oil. Approximately 1 quart.
