Question Rear Disk Brake Options?

Folks,
Do any of you have an info on rear disk brake setups for our truck 9" rear axle? I don't want the weld on caliper brackets, and I need a functioning emergency brake. What about the Explorer setups? I like the shoe type emergency brake setup and simple caliper. Here's some SVO kit pictures for reference, just scroll down:
http://www.shellvalley.com/cobra/build.asp
I layed under an Explorer and the bearing retainer bolt pattern is 2"x3-1/2". My '59 is 2-3/8"x3-1/2". Do they make a SVO big bearing kit, or if not how much work is necessary to redrill the Explorer pieces? How about the bearing centerhole? The rotors look like with a pattern redrill they'd slip over the '59 axles. I also ran across a very similiar setup for a Grand Cherokee Dana 35/44:
http://www.stu-offroad.com/brakeconv/bc-1.htm
These are so close to the Explorer setup that the emergency brake shoes and some of the hardware is interchangeable with the Explorer setup. Has anybody had a look at any of these parts so see if they would work better? I'm open to any comments, and that include 80's Lincoln MkVII's, or even the 80's Jeep rotor/80's Cad caliper aftermarket kits.
Thanks,
Brett

Rear Disk Brake Options?

Brett,

I have axles with disk brake hardware on them. As you say, these are from an early 80's Lincoln. From the excellent info on rear axles that was posted on another thread, I expect to use the truck bearing retainer plate, the spacer, and the appropriate bearing. One drawback, it will have the big bolt pattern. I will be going to a Cordoba front end and I wanted to use the small Ford bolt pattern axles on the rear. I'll have to think about a fix for that.

Rear Disk Brake Options?

I used a 95 crown vic rear end ( 92 - 97 are inter changable), and they have rear disk brakes, with shoe type emergency brakes. The width was within 3/4" of the old differental, and the bolt pattern is the same as the volare/corodba...

Rear Disk Brake Options?

I have a Wilwood Pro Street Kit on my shelf since quite a few years. It was drilled for 4 1/2", 4 3/4" and 5" bolt circle and there was enough room for a fourth one which I added (5 1/2"). Right now I have a 70 Torino 9" with 4 1/2" pattern mounted, but I also have a Currie Enterprises Pro Street 9" rearend (with that fat round centered housing) on the shelf for which I had axles with the 5 1/2" pattern made to match my stock (disc brake converted) front end. Right now I would have to carry two spare tires.

Problem is the parking brake. There's none. I was thinking about adding one to the driveshaft (i.e. the pinion joke or whatever that thing is called which sticks out of the rearend to which the driveshaft is mounted).

Rear Disk Brake Options?

Robert,
Tell me more about the Crown Vic setup. Does it look like the Explorer setup? Does it look any better or worse? What size rotors does it use?
Thanks,
Brett

Rear Disk Brake Options?

Disclaimer.... these results may work differently for others, i am not an engineer, nor do i profess to being one, ....

I have access to crown vic parts, so i use what i got...

The rear disk are 11.25" in diamater, and have the shoes in the center of the disk. I transplanted, (or is it implanted), the whole differental, emergency brake system in my F 1. The Crown vic has coil springs and a differnt mounting system than the '50, so i cut/ground/torched all the mounts off the differenal, and fabbed my own mounts. I built the perchs for the differental to sit under the springs, set the pinon angle (thank you Dr John D for the advice), and built shock mounts on the differental, in the same location as the orginal. I used the same part number shocks as orginal, and did the first burnout (the only one so far) (btw, make sure the seat is bolted down be fore burning out )

all the brake capiler fittings for the crown vic ar metric.... so i ran metric lines on the differental, and the "tee" for the brake lines has 2-metric fittings, and 1- standard, and i rand standard hose out and to the chassis.

As far as the emerency brake system, I took all the cables, and the emegency brake foot pedalout of the car also, the pedal assy has a push to apply, and push again to disenage setup, and a vacummn module so it automaticlly disenages when the selector is moved from park ( i nstalled a column outta a fleetwood, and it had the vacumn switch already mounted on the column.

The crown vic has the same bolt pattern as the volare, but the front hubs ( The center of the wheel) openning on the volare is about 1/16th" smaller than the crown vic. I wanted to run only 1 size of wheels ( so the spare fits in any position), so i took the front disk down to the machine shop, and had the turn 3/32" off on the front rotor hub, and the crown vic wheels fit.

Now as far as wheels go... the 14" volare wheels will fit on the front or back, and the 15" crown vic wheels will too..
