It's the rear main seal. Okay, now that I know what it is and what I need to do, can anyone tell me if the rear main on the 302 is a one piece or a two piece?
I've never had a 302 but my books say it should have a 2 piece rope seal if original. Sounds like a big job. Tranny and oil pan needs to be removed then loosen the main caps to let the crank drop 1/32". Completely remove the rear cap to get the seal out. Install the new seal with 3/8" of it protruding on the opposite side of the main bearing cap parting surface. This is out of the haynes manual so take it with a grain of salt. I've never actually changed one myself with the engine still in the vehicle. Still waiting for pictures!
Okay, since I have no idea how to get the pics on this specific thread, I made a new album of my own and posted some pics there. It's under DCFord's albums and it's titled 79 Ford F-100. Please take a look and let me know what you think. Now !!!.......hopefully the much needed feedback and assistance will start up again.....
Valve cover gaskets changed and they sealed perfectly, however, after driving down the road and back I popped the hood and saw some oil on the driver side valve cover again. Looks like it came from around the oil fill. The PCV valve is working properly, so what could cause this type of blowback? Too much pressure, bad seal around the fill cap? Help me out here please.
