Power Steering
70's f250, vin says '77 but that's questionable -- it has 1ton axles and the bed doesn't bolt all the way onto the frame in the back so it's more likely than not a total custom setup...anyways
FE 360 motor - no AC, just alt belt and pwr/s belt
HERE's my problem:
I refilled the power steer by removing the level check stick and pouring into the dip stick valve (pretty sure that's the right way/only way)
--When I started it up, the power steering fluid gets shot out of cannon, past the dip stick and everything...just firing out (high pressure mist, it still has a good seal but not that good obviously.
--I turned the wheels to see if maybe i just put too much in and to try and get the fluid to level out BUT it squirted until it was dry and THEN the power steering pulley and belt jumped around and squealed pretty bad whenever the wheels were turned.
I disconnected a wire that was connected onto the adjustment bolt for the power steering belt underneath its nut (3 bolts ontop the box and one point out away from the alt and towards the front left wheel or if you're facing the engine, to your right side). I assume that turned off the power steering box...next startup it wasn't making the noise. Now, I called it a day there.
So, i've got a couple scenerios that may be the problem...
1--that wire is just not supposed to be hot wired to the powersteering
or 2. the powersteering is in need or service.
What's the deal with this power steering box? Anybody had the fluid shoot out like that before and can i service this or do i need a new p/s box?
--I hope this warrants me asking the question but i had to stop where i was at tonight -- no more time left for under the hood today.
I appreciate the help
