Need a little help

My 15 year old nephew is wanting to buy himself a Ford diesel. I have no idea where he gets that from. His money is limited but he is determined. He's found a 94 F250 4x4 diesel. I went him to look at it. The truck was clean and ran good, 209K auto tyranny. Here's my question, how can I tell if its a Powerstroke? It has a Turbo, but that's about all that looks like mine. Turbo is a lot smaller and intake is angled different. Big thing I saw, the oil fill was in the front over the timing cover. Like I said, I drove it and it ran very strong, it looks good and everything appears solid. Is it worth $5500.00? Is it a powerstroke? Can we add a little more power to it later? Thanks guys.

Is it a manual trans? I have been wrong before but my understanding was that in 94 just the manual trucks were turbo. Is it a PSD? Great question. Someone will know.

It is an auto tranny. I'm just not familiar with the older diesels. It looked a lot different than mine. Looked at the Turbo and
it was in good shape not puffing from oil fill, no transmission slipping and good power, I just want to help point him in the right direction. He really likes the truck.

Thanks, I did see that earlier, but still was unsure. It appears to be the IDI, is that still good? Bad?

It is still a great engine and very reliable!!! To find one of these in good condition is very rare. I probably wouldn't give more than 4500 for the truck.

Barry give Cody (RubberDuck) a shout he is really extremely knowledgeable when it comes to the OBS trucks. I am sure that he would be more than happy to give you and your nephew a few pointers.

If you can see the injector fuel line it is an IDI and will have a injector pump bolted to the front of the engine above the valley pan. I had 3 IDI's, 87 light duty 250, 92 350 dually and 93 heavy duty 250. The Power stroke came out in 94 but I think the IDI was still available also but with a turbo?
The IDI was a great engine (185hp) and got good fuel mileage, my 92 & 93 got around 17 to 18 MPG.

I have a '94 and mine has the cover on the top of the motor that says direct injection. The oil filler is in the pass side valve cover like the newer ones. Mine is also a 5 spd. You can also decode the the vin and that will tell you for sure. I believe the 8th position has to be an F or K to be a psd. I am not 100% on this but mine has an F in the 8th position and it is a psd. From your description I am sure you have the IDI with a turbo.

Thanks Guys, I'm pretty sure it's the IDI as well, just wanted to make sure. The truck is very clean and solid and I think he's going to get it. It is as solid of truck as I'v seen in that price range.
