As some of you may be aware my country, Canada, has signed on to the Koyoto accord with the aim to reduce CO2 emissions. In todays newspaper they are talking about manditory emisions testing. It is aimed at older vehicles that apparentlyl polute a lot more than the new ones.
What am I going to be up against? What can be done to clean up the old beast?
What are the target emission specifications? Older vehicles that are in good tune and have been well maintained will generaly put out less c02 than their newer counterparts. This is due to the fact that newer vehicles have higher combustion tempratures and the use of a catalyst which creates c02 from carbonmonoxide and and unburned oxagen in the exhaust. If I had the pass fail specs I could make a better guess as to if you would pass. But if everything on your truck is in good working order than I would assume that you would have no trouble passing.
Where I'm at 65-74 vehicles are expected to pass with 5% or less CO and less than 900 ppm of hydrocarbons. If it's a "commercial vehicle" then you can get away with 6% CO. Was looking this up earlier. Only applies to Ada County in Idaho. Hopefully in Canada they'll set similar or more lax testing on the old vehicles.
How are you having to smog your car now? Is it a loaded mode testing (with a dyno) or just a BAR 90 test (no dyno). I read some of the Kyoto accord, it's really general. They want global GHG emissions down by 5.2% of the measured 1990 level in 5 years.
It will never happen unless the U.S. ratifies the accord simply for the fact the U.S. put out about a third of the Measured GHG emissions. I live in california and I know the state is trying to do something simular with c02, but fortunataly it won't concern me because my truck dosent even have to smog because of grandfather laws here. I would be supprised if this will effect you if you don't smog now.
