Question

on the side of the fuel filter there is a thing that looks like the air valve (stem ) on a tire, can someone tell me what this is and what it does? Thanks

It is a schrader valve. It is like an air valve. It can be used to bleed air from the fuel sytem and to attach a pressure gauge like you would on a fuel injected gasser. It can also be used to check flow volume etc. If you d oa search on here you will find info on all the above.
