I bought a 95 f250 the otherday with a powerstroke diesel and auto transmission. But the little piece of cast aluminum broke that holds 4wd shifter up and pivots on and it was stuck in 4 high so I crawled underneith and manualy pushed it into 2wd and went for a test drive. When i thought everything would be fine after 2 miles I went to slow down and when I let off the throttle something started grinding and i stepped on the throttle again and there was a loud clunk and bang and it started goin again so I figured that its kicking out of 2wd and hitting neutral or half into 4h or something. so after i got back home I crawled underneath and tried to put it in 4h and got in put it in reverse and it started grinding so I quickly put trans in neutral than I put In drive and it done the same thing. so than I tried 4 low and it worked fine so I put it back in 2wd and when ever you hit a bump or shift from drive to reverse a few times it kicks out and starts grinding. So i'm wondering is my 4h $%^ked.
I just tried everything again and found this out: When I put it 4high the light don't come on but it used to, when i put it in 2wd and put it in gear it grinds and I climbed underneath and it still in 2wd and so it doesn't kick out and i put it in 4 high and the same thing happens. Also would a transfer case off an F-150 the same year be interchangeable.
I'm not sure from your post, but is the portion that broke off a part of the casted transfer case? Before you replace it, I wonder if it could be repaired by a qualified welder.

I can try to get a pic of it, I can weld it if I can get it off, I have a f150 parts ford that has everything I need to fix it if transfercase bolts on to a f250 auto from a 5spd f150
