1990 Bronco 351w, it cuts out and then the rpm gage will jump up high usually no higher then 3000rpms though. any idea's what may cause this?
Thank you
Sounds like a fuel delivery problem complicated by a computer trying to compensate for the loss of fuel. Do you have a fuel pressure gage? How's the usual suspects? Tune-up?
Well, it does only cut out dureing acceleration,it does idle just fine, i havent gave it a tune up since i bought it,that was actually what i was going to start with, was new spark plug wires and go from there.
However it does not have a fuel pressure gauge?
You need to get the codes the EEC is sending. Go to fordfuelinjection.com to read up on the procedure. The engine has a host of sensors and a suspect fuel delivery system. So, all troubleshooting guides area must.
A total shot in the dark..... If you don't have any trouble codes (all sensors are functioning properly), consider your ignition system. The truck idling normally, and then starting to act up after you increase the engine revs sounds like it could be a bad ignition module or stator / pickup coil, especially if the tach is jumping around erratically before the engine dies. I've had both to go bad with the same symptoms. I'd do the tune-up, but if you do have an electronics problem in the ignition system and something is on it's way out, soon enough it's going to die and not come back to life. Something to keep in mind; I'm not much on swapping out parts for the sake of it, but if you've never changed these out and you're okay with dropping a few $$$ to try them out, keep them in mind as a possibility.
