D60 question

ok I think I am going to tear my axles down to the skeleton to have them blasted and powdercoated. I have only messed with the carrier in a jeep wrangler and that was years ago. I figure while I have it out I could put a locker in. My question is what is involved in removing the gear carrier and putting in a locker. Any help is appreciated.

Removing the old carrier should be easy. It may just fall out on it's own. At worst, it will take a little motivation with a pry bar. However, when you re-install the carrier with NEW bearings, you're "supposed" to use a housing spreader. However, you can probably get by with just hammering it in........

Oh....and get some "setup" bearings.

Are you changing the ring and pinion as well?

I wasnt going to change them. after looking at the price of lockers I might just weld the spiders. so just unbolt and drop huh? does this require shims? I know the jeep one had shims and all that fun crap.

If you are not changing the ring and pinion, and the pinion doesn't have any slack....it "SHOULD" be just a bolt in job. However, if your pinion is loose, you WILL have to re-shim it. If you put in a different carrier, you will have to shim that too. The shims are between the bearing and carrier.....meaning you will have to press the bearings on and off every time you change shims. "Setup" bearings will speed the process. However, you will probably have to use a press at least once or twice.

But, as long as everything is in good shape now, it should bolt in just as it was......with no re-shimming.

No, the 60 uses a solid pinion shim. This is why you can re-assemble it without having to re-adjust anything.
