Outrageous Fuel Consumption

82 F-150, 300 six. Few mods to the engine, nothing really radical and has always given me about 17-20ish mpg.

As of yesterday it consumed 11 dollars worth of fuel, roughly 7.5 gallons of gas, in a 30 mile trip. I'm stumped as to what the problem might be.

The engine is in good tune, and the timing is spot on, but i will check this later, it sounds like it has a slight miss at about 45mph, and will not get out of its own way, no matter how much i get into it.

Anybody got any ideas to what my problem may be?

For the moment its got me stumped.....

first I would check the timing and then the fuel filter and air filter...did you forget to release the parking brake?

Parking brake is seldom used in my truck, so it wouldn't be the problem.

i took the carb all apart earlier and examined it, fiddled with the choke some and started her up.

It seems its seeping gas out from under the top of the carb, around the front edge, either its warped, or i need a new gasket.

I'm thinking of plopping down the cash and getting a rebuild kit and just put it all back together.

(p.s. Desperado2010 was me, had to re-sign in with my old ID.)

did you notice any black smoke indicating a rich condition? I have seen carbs loosen up on the intake manifold is it possable that it is loose or the base gasket is nolonger sealing? maybe there is a hole in the fuel sysem

No black smoke etc, i haven't noticed any fuel leaks, other than in between the top of the carb, and the base, where the gasket is.

I don't know if its the gasket being old, and having been compressed multiple times in its lifetime, so that its worn out.

my float level could be wrong (sitting too high in the bowl) allowing it to overflow the carb (but its been at this adjustment for 3 or 4 months now.)

i'm just stumped, i'll be putting in a rebuild kit tomorrow, and i'll post more info afterwards.

Well, turns out that it was the carb airhorn gasket, i replaced that, along with doing a rebuild, and its back to normal, although i haven't taken it on a trip yet. i'm monitoring fuel mileage as i go, to see if it goes back to drinking it again.

hope this helps somebody.
