82 F-150, 300 six. Few mods to the engine, nothing really radical and has always given me about 17-20ish mpg.
As of yesterday it consumed 11 dollars worth of fuel, roughly 7.5 gallons of gas, in a 30 mile trip. I'm stumped as to what the problem might be.
The engine is in good tune, and the timing is spot on, but i will check this later, it sounds like it has a slight miss at about 45mph, and will not get out of its own way, no matter how much i get into it.
first I would check the timing and then the fuel filter and air filter...did you forget to release the parking brake?

did you notice any black smoke indicating a rich condition? I have seen carbs loosen up on the intake manifold is it possable that it is loose or the base gasket is nolonger sealing? maybe there is a hole in the fuel sysem

Well, turns out that it was the carb airhorn gasket, i replaced that, along with doing a rebuild, and its back to normal, although i haven't taken it on a trip yet. i'm monitoring fuel mileage as i go, to see if it goes back to drinking it again.
