Neither door on my 94 has stayed open on its own since I bought it. I bought some replacement flat kinges on ebay from Florida Fasteners. The replacements are flat steel with a rounded lip on one end and a tab with bolt hole on the other. I removed the bolt from the broken spring on the passengers door hinge but it doesn't want to pry off.
Does anyone know if they're welded or riveted on the stock hinges?
Sorry about the lack of pics, my camera has gone AWOL.
I did one of my doors a couple of years ago... if i remember correctly the OEM spring is welded to the hinge... and the new spring bolts right on top of the old one... You don't have to remove the old one.
That's great. Thanks alot for that response. The new spring is curved at one end. If I'm bolting it over the broken spring, Do I have the curve out toward the door or in toward the jam? Thanks again.
I have to do my passenger door pins (as my fiancee just reminded me). I'll take a look and...if I remember...post a how-to with pics. I'll service the springs and adjust them while I'm at it, so I'll look at how they are mounted.
Well goodBoy, I followed your advice and just mounted them over top of the broken springs. The bolt is a 13mm and I was able to slide a ratcheting box wrench through the hinge from the inside and remove the bolt. Reinstalling the bolt with the new spring was much more awkward but doable with lots of cursing. I installed them with the curve toward the door. I ended up having to shim the passenger side because the old spring had broken off quite a ways back and was allowing the new spring to flex too much, and releasing the door.
Hopefully this fix lasts. Thanks for the help and I hope this ends up being useful to someone else.
glad it all worked out... good idea on the shim as I found that the new spring didn't work too well. I'll try shimming mine and see if it helps... thanxs!
