No start situation

Hi, 94 3.0LT will not start. It seems like the colder it is the harder it is to start. after cranking for about a a half an hour it will cough and come to life. While running, it runs great. Well now its so cold out i have almost run the battery dead trying to start it. Pulled codes and got 114 and 116.
I dont know if this matters that the engine was stone cold when i pulled codes. the IAT was replaced about 2 years ago as was the ECT sensor(second time since ive owned it).
any idead would be appreciated. thanks, jim

Neither of those sensors are active on cold start up, so you can ignore those codes for now. No starts are generally either fuel or spark related. If you turn the key to the RUN position, you should hear the fuel pump come on for 1 or 2 seconds to pressurize the injector rails. If not, you have an issue there with loose wiring, bad ignition switch or failing pump.

If you hear the pump come on as described, test the electricals by removing one of the easier to reach spark plugs. Re-attach the plug wire and find a way to lay the side of the plug on a grounded surface such as a bare bolt head, support bracket, etc. You can also use a grounding clamp. Have a friend try and start the engine while you observe the plug. You should see a nice, snapping spark across the electrode. If not, therein lies the problem and the likelihood is a distributor issue. I'll stop here as there are more knowledgeable people to help further diagnose issues with the 3.0 engine, mine is a 4.0 which has the distributorless (EDIS) system.

Take heart, most of these type problems are easily fixed.

Those codes are contained in continuous memory so they will be there until the problem is fixed or you delete them. Make sure you have correctly timed sparks & fuel pressure & compression.
Do you have the block heater on your engine? if so I would plug it in overnight & then see what she starts like with a charged battery. If it fires right up, replace both of those sensors or at least test them they are easy to test; might be best to get OEM parts.

More testing required!

Throttle position voltage is out of range. Remove it & check with a multimeter, ( analogue set to OHMS is best, adjust the range to get a full scale reading) the readings should be smooth & consistent throughout the entire range of throttle travel.

No IDM (spout) signal, basically the ignition module does not output any RPM signal to the EEC. Either the module is bad or a wire is broken or shorted, check the wires. SPOUT should be able to run a tachometer.

Thanks for the reply. I will try to find a multi-meter. Whatever it is it appears to be getting worse. Two weeks ago i could run it before going to bed and it would start with a little cranking in the morning. Now after its been fully warmed if i let it sit a couple hours, it doesnt want to start. I always manage to get it started but it takes like a half hour of cranking and no signs of life until it starts to cough a little then i can finally get it stared.
