Im currently tossing the ideas around between restoring my 1929 Model A roadster to original, and rodding it out a little, putting a modern v8 into it, allowing it to be driven more often.
I will be doing the work myself, either which way. Im not one of those guys that wants to buy a nice car, I would like to build it (and learn along the way)
Just looking for opinions on the subject. (specially from my fellow DIY's!!)
Ask me a year or two ago, and it woulda been rodded, and as of lately Ive been seeing more originals (like Ryans and Chris's trucks) and have been really appreciating the stockness of them.
I tend to kinda sway back and forth on the subject.
I was also considering restoring it to stock in my uncles memory, but my dad had actually said something that kinda made me think that it wouldnt have to be stock for my uncle to appreciate the work I will do on it (so thats less of a variable too)
Car (in case some people want to reply that havent seen it before)
see... you need 2. one modded, one original. in the long run, its probably cheaper to do it modded, not to mention much more user friendly if its done right...
nothing says you cant rod it out but maintain the stockness yourself. put in that modern v8 and keep the solid front axle. keep the drum brakes (i still got em). i would move the fuel tank tho, having it in the front cowl in a little unsafe especially when dramatically increasing hp (60-over 200)
stock, unrestored...could be the most economical. You could leave the paint and body as is, as long as it's functional and safe. Seems to be more individuals that like stock, unrestored...as they say it's only original once. This car, if it is easy to get running...would certainly be interesting with the original paint as is...has a nice patina about it.
Rodded- make it a highboy with high, thin old style wheels, put a flathead V8 in with a couple or three Stromberg one barrel carbs and a hotter then stock cam. Give it that '30's to early '50's rod look, like the kind they used to run on the dry lakes in California, back in the '30's to 50's.
Go nuts. Get the bodywork done if it needs any, get a nice paint job, install modern running gear like a SBF...5 liter Mustang engine and 5 speed would be nice and a popular philosophy in the rodding world, is make sure all the parts are from the same mfr...ie: keep Ford/Chevy, all Ford/Chevy, modern axle, beef the frame for safety, modern front end, disc brakes...nice...old style body, modern running gear...could be pricey.
Rat Rod- here in the Peg, every year Rat Rods seem to get more popular. I don't know exactly what makes a rod a rat, but conversations with owners seems to be, use what you got, make sure it can pass a safety (mandatory in Mb.) and drive as is, ripped seat covers, leave paint as is, rust is the new patina, convertible top in tatters, engine belching oil...of course some Rat Rods are in much better shape then my descriptor.
What I would suggest is to type in T Roadster Images...something like that and review the pictures...you might see something that really turns your crank and that's what you want to do...find something you really like and start the project.
Sorry, Preppy, I'm not much of a DIY...good luck and keep us posted as to the direction you follow.
I like the looks of it the way it is. I leave it with the 4cyl in it. I think that car looks gfreat as a 30's-50's style rod of that era. Do not paint it. It just suits that car the way it is. I would get the mechanicals up to sniuff for safe driving.
I agree with less leave it the old salt flat look. You just do not see these old school rod jbs anymore and they just look so kool the way they are. It will draw lots of attention at car shows and meets. Just the way it is.
Well i would like to paint it and stuff eventually, but for the time being I may leave it as is.
Main thing I would like to do is improve the driveability of it, I mean I do live 20 minutes of out the city, and thats mainly where I would drive it, so in the end I would like it to be able to do some sort of distances fairly well.
