I have a 1986 F250 with a 5.0 EFI. The previous owner also wired in a fuse for the fuel pump. Recently my truck has had a bit of a problem starting. The engine wouldn't turn over at all, so i would take out the fuse for the fuel pump, and it would start up. Im not sure if this is because it is somehow connected it turning over or not. This time though, it wont turn over at all. Not sure if its because the starter is dead or not or if its an electrical problem. and would the starter not turn over on a couple of tries, then turn over if it was on its way to its death bed? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks
first i would make sure your fender relay is working. I would say that it is. if your starter doesn't want to fire off the firsts time and your battery is charged then i would just replace the starter. The fuse for the fuel pump sound like a different problem. not sure why a fuse was wired into the pump. should have a fuse in the box to cover that. but for sure two seperate issues.
Test everything. First, test the battery for proper voltage (likely not the issue if it is intermittent and such), then the relay, then the starter. If you jump the relay and it starts - you eliminated both right there. If you jump the relay and no start, but it clicks - starter.
Oh and make sure to examine the cables and grounds. They are too often responsible for other issues including ones like yours.
I agree though that they seem to be two different issues. I would not let the fuel pump issue go though - there is a reason the other owner wired it in there, and did not replace the factory one. Whether they fixed it properly or not is a different story.
