So, Uncle Sam is sending me back to Keesler AFB for some re-education. I spent a couple months there back in 2006 but it was shortly after Katrina and it was still quite a mess down there. What is it like these days? Anyone from there or been there recently that can give me the lowdown?
I'll be there for eight weeks or so with a three-day weekend every other week. I have family a couple hours away that I will spend some weekends with but am hoping to find some other stuff to do locally. Any suggestions?
Deep South: good food, good fishing, good music, good people. If you have the time and feel like taking a day, drive over to Pensacola to the Aviation museum. If the weather is good enough, check out the beaches down there. You know how it is being away from home, just go out and have fun.

Pensacola is on the list already since I have family on the Alabama/Florida line - maybe even make the Mullet Toss at Florabama in April. New Orleans is on the agenda of course and maybe even a trip deep into Cajun country.
Fun is certainly part of the plan. As much as I will miss the kids, an eight hour day with no other responsibilities is tough to beat. It will seem like a vacation....
I haven't been there since 64 -- so I'm sure it's changed. Back then, it was a small town, and they didn't especially care for us. (Especially those of us in our early 20s trying to connect with the local girls )
They've probably rebuilt the Casino by now, and there are some nice beaches. New Orleans isn't far, of course, and there's always stuff going on there.
Things are cleaned up. Lots of empty apartments available. When are you arriving? I live about 12 miles from Keesler to the west. drop me a PM and I'll send you my Phone # so I can buy you a cup of coffee.
Well, I survived another Air Force school. This one was pretty crazy but I learned a good bit.
Got to meet up briefly with shorebird at one of Gulfport's finer eating establishments and actually caught him working the other day going onto Keesler - he must post on here in his sleep because he is always working.
Perfect weather almost the entire time I was down there and now made it home just about in time for spring to start all over again for me. Two springs in one year......love it.
Don't know how active I will be on here in the near future - lots happening for me but we'll see you folks around when time permits.

I was glad to meet you. Sorry I had to run out on our get-together. Yes I do give up sleep sometimes to visit FTE. It's the one addiction I have. And you are correct about me working all the time. I have not taken a day off since the 24th of October '08. That's 562 days; 1 year, 6 months, and 15 days. I'm on call 24/7.
Enough about me. What was your impression of the recovery taking place here on the coast? The oak trees are greening up in a way we haven't seen since they were torn up by the storm. Some of the trees that looked dead are leafing out.
I was amazed at the progress since I was in Biloxi last in early 2006. It was nice to see most of the wrecked houses gone, the base is all cleaned up with a ton of new houses and the new Commissary/BX up and running finally and even the casinos were a welcome sight. Looks like whoever is in charge of the recovery is doing a pretty good job.
The best part of my entire stay down there was the weather - perfect for all but a couple days I was there.
My wife & I drove over to the coast after a visit to Mobile back on April 10th. My first real visit since Katrina. Was really pleased to see the progress & saddened to see all the empty spaces.
Checked out the Walter Anderson Museum in Ocean Springs. Beautiful work & glad it was saved.
You aren't going to believe this David but myself and a couple friends toured Beauvoir on the 10th of April as well. Did you go out back and see the cemetary and the Confederate encampment they had going? What a treasure they have there and I agree - amazing job on the restoration, especially after seeing it four years ago without porches.
No, we went to the Camillia Classic @ Bellengrath on the 10th & went to the MS coast on the way back the following Mon. Dang if I didn't start to drop you a PM before we went, but figured you were living on a mil schedule. Beauvoir was deserted that afternoon we went.
I posted some pics in the MS chapter April BS thread.
