I am thinking of selling my Expedition and getting an Excursion. My Expedition has given me 107k trouble free miles. I am going to be towing more. I want to get a PSD but I was wondering what the mileage on one is. Is it worth it to pay the big bucks for the PSD?
How much will you towing (Both distance and weight)?
If you are towing alot of weight - get the diesel.
If you are towing a moderate amount of weight for fairly long distances - get the diesel.
If you are towing moderate weight for short distances - get the v10.
If you are towing light weight - get the v10.
If you are high milage - get the diesel.
If you make alot of short trips - get the v10.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with the v8 - your savings are not significant both in the purchase price and in the operation/maintenance of the truck and you'll love the extra HP and Torque!
For detailed information that helped me to arrive at the conclusions I have expressed above, do a search in this forum, the Superduty forum and in the V10 forum for a wide range of opinions regarding this subject - you will find a wealth of information...
These are my opinions - your milage may vary!

I will be towing a 26' car trailer. My car only weighs 1700lbs. I will mostly have the trailer loaded with safety equipment for track side support. I will travel no more than 6 hours away from home. I will tow around 7,000 lbs give or take a little.
Thanks for the input. What kind of mileage should I expect from either one? (the PSD / V10)
Get the diesel. The V10 will handle this load just fine, but you are entering into the relm where the diesel rules.
Unloaded, my V10 gets approximately 12 around town, 15 on the highway and 8-9 off road. From what I have read in the Superduty forum, the off road mileage that I've experienced is about what I would expect if towing.
Based on other posts, I would expect the diesel to get 5-7 mpg better than this.
I tow with the V10 and love it. I only tow about 3,000 miles a year though! If you tow as much as you say, then go with the 7.3 or better yet the 6.0. If you buy either one though you are winning by buying a "X"
