Oil Pressure Problem

I let my truck run 5 qts low on oil about a month ago, dont ask, i know. Since i refilled it ( i just threw whatever oil i had in it, mixed weights ) i have had a slight pressure problem. After driving for a while and letting the motor get nice and warm, when i stop at lights and such the oil pressure goes non existant. While sitting at the light the truck will go to between 500-700 rpm idle and during that time the needle drops and the engine light comes on, if i press the gas and jump the rpms, the pressure goes back ( normally at about 1000 rpm and up ).

What could the problem be ?

I have new Castrol high miliage 20w-50 and a new filter to change the oil in the garage which i will most likely do this weekend but i have a 4 hour trip coming up in 3 weeks and would not like to have any problems on the way.

I used to run 10w-30 but i was told that it would be better to run heavy stuff because i let it run low. I also have an oil leak from my valve cover gaskets which will be fixed shortly.

You are probably running on borrowed time with an engine that was ran that low on oil. An engine has no real bearings in it, it relys on a thing film of pressurized oil to cool, cushion and lubricate the engine. I am pretty sure your engine is a gonner. Your best bet is to run the 20-50 oil, cross your fingers and toes, and start saving for a rebuild!

It runs great, i had a little lifter tap when it ran low and when i refilled it, it went away. Someone told me the oil pump will most likely need the be replaced. There is no other things wrong with it that are noticeable. If it was running on borrowed time wouldnt i know it from other signs, she idles great, runs cool, makes great power still.

And just a little fyi, When i ran it low on oil my pressure was fine except at low RPMS as well, during a normal operating RPM's the oil pressure was normal as well. It was pretty much doing the same as it is now but now it has oil.
