Ok so I'm going to put a new body on my 79 f250. I have a 79 f150 2 wheel drive that I'm using as a donor truck but it has a freshly rebuilt 460 in it. Since I'm going to have the entire body off of my 250 should I swap out my 400 for the 460? Theres nothing wrong with the 400 in my 250, but since I'll have everything apart I figure I might as well just swap the motors too. What do you guys think? Also what other things am I going to need to do to make it work? Different radiator? New motor mounts? Thanks in advance.
Absolutely. Any reason you can't just swap the motor mounts and pan too? Otherwise, I'd recommend the L & L mounts. Some other guys here have other ideas too.
As for the pan you can buy a rear sump pan from Ford with a pickup tube and dipstick or you can get it from performance places like Summit or Jegs (usually about the same price)
Are you putting a 460 into a 4x4? if so, I did lots of these swaps with L&L and they all broke the left side motor mount. My brother and I finall decided to build our own mounts. I went to Autozone and bought 2 left side (I think, Or 2 right side but I'm pretty sure they were left) mounts for a 4x4 390 truck they were $7.00 each, thats right, $7.00 each, and cut one corner off with a die grinder to clear the manifolds, reemed the holes out slightly, and bolted them on to the 460. you use only 2 bolts instead of three in the block, but I didn't worry since there is only one bolt in the frame. clears everything and the engine sets in the right place too. The studs on the 390 mounts aren't centered so bolt them on where the engine sets where you want it, they can be rotated to move the engine forward, back, up or down. The only problem is the fan almost rubs the shroud, I could fix this though if i was to adjust the radiator and shroud both down.
Keep in mind.....for the cost of swapping the 460......you could probably get more power out of the 400(assuming there is nothing special about the 460).
