Any diesel mechinics?
I have seen old military engines that would start on gas, then could be switched over to burn oil, but todays diesels will not burn gasoline. The compression ratio is too high, preignition would tear them apart, plus gas doesn't do anthing to lubricate the injectors.

The Continental LDS 465 1A turbo engine used in the M812 6X6 military trucks is a duel fuel engine its compression ratio is 22 .1
this engines will run on gasoline with an octane rating of 76 ...theses engines are awsome I really have no idea how they run the gasoline .....

Those engines that start on gas and then switch to diesel have another chamber in the head that is only accessed when a valve is opened up. It does this to lower compression to a level that won't let the gas detonate (pre ignition). This was used in old diesels mostly because the cranking systems of the time were so poor they didn't have the speed or the battery capacity to ignite the diesel when everything was cold. They had very little power when run on gas and normally only a small gas tank.

We've had some of the V-16 92 series Detroits that were converted to duel fuel. We used a mixture of natural gas with the diesel after the engine was loaded. The Detroits couldn't handle it. We had all kinds of head problems and the pistons didn't last that great either. We wound up changing the injectors back to stock for a straight diesel and cut the lines on the natural gas.
