OK I've just replaced my IDM and PCM and got my truck running, but it has no glowplugs. I put in the new GPR and when I turn the key on my GPR LED lights up for 1 second maybe 2 seconds and then it quits working. So I thought I just got a bad GPR and I was just out there and put in a new GPR and it did the same thing the LED lit up for just a second and it was gone. Other than that when I do get the truck running it runs fine, and starts right up when its warm. Anyone have any ideas of what I can look at?
Why did you have to change the PCM & IDM? Did you switch to a different PCM code when you changed?
I'm guessing the issue is the PCM not sending the ground signal long enough. I'd start by verifying the ground signal on the small post on the GPR matches what you see on your LED. Then unplug the EOT sensor and cylce the key and see if that has any effect for the on time.
I forgot to mention that the LED only lights up for the first key cycle with the new GPR. Now when i turn the key on the LED doesn't light up or nothing. It only lit up that 1 time. Until i put another GPR in and it would light up 1 time then nothing. I unplugged the EOT sensor a couple days ago as i read on here it suppose to turn the glowplugs on for 2min I think I read.
Well I'm not sure why the IDM went out I hauled it into a mechanic and he ran his scan tool on it and it came back with a dead IDM so I ordered another one of them. Then with the PCM he said it wasn't building enough oil pressure for the injectors for the motor too start. We would have to spin the motor for long periods of time for it to fire, and he also said it might be why the glowplugs weren't working, and said it probably wasn't getting the ground signal like you mentioned. The PCM I ordered I gave them my VIN number and they programmed it for my truck. So I'm hoping there isn't a problem there.
I'm thinking you should find a new mechanic, or start hanging out here more often and fix this stuff yourself. Sounds like you've got a bunch of expensive new parts and haven't fixed anything.
Let's start at the beginning and see if we can figure out what is wrong with your truck. First, what post is your LED wired to, and do you know how to test the GPR? Do you remember what PSI the truck was building that was deemed to be too low? Did he monitor IPR duty % while watching the ICP psi to rule out an IPR issue?
Anything and everything you can tell us would be helpful.
Whats the temp. where you are pickupman? Cold enough to activate the gpr. I think these have an ambient sensor which may be bad. Anybody else know ? Chris probably knows for sure -Could it be a defective led .Can u check voltage on output side of gpr?
In Dec. the truck died on me when i was goin to town and it hasn't ran til about 2 weeks ago when I put in the new IDM
I got the LED on the right large post not the hot side. I've had that on there for 6-8 months. I was there when he was testing the IDM and did the injector test and when I brought in the new IDM you could hear the Injectors buzz after we installed it. He installed a new Injector Pressure Valve and from what he said it had no effect on anything. We would spin the motor for long periods of time and it would fire but not keep running. He sat in there watching the pressures and % you asked about but i cant remember what they were at. After it did that a few times we got it running. He said the next thing he would try is the PCM so I brought it home put it in the heated shop after I put the new PCM in it started right up, and that was the first time i noticed the LED would only stay lit for a second or so. Also I'm not really sure how to test the gpr.
I'm in North Dakota it has been around 10 degrees today. The day it died on me it was around -20 so i thought it was gelled up at first. I'll check the voltage on the output side of it tomorrow.
I was just out and grounded the small post and the GPR clicked so its not that. I just turned the heat on in the shop. I'm gona pull it in and trace the wire on the small post and see if its pinched or something.
How long has your chip been installed? Could it be a lose///bad connection at the pcm...Did you hook it back up when you put in the new pcm? Does the f6 have a led display and is it lit? I want to see how this turns out...Good luck keep digging MATT
I didn't put the dp back in after the new pcm since it had stickers sayin it would void warranty if I took them off to install it. I am going nuts without that dp tuner installed lol. I'm at a loss of what to look at I might just call the place I got the pcm and ask them if its possible it isn't sending the signal to the gpr.
I had them send me another pcm. Installed it, just like magic glowplugs working perfectly. Thanks for all the replys sure learned a lot on the wiring on top of the motor lol.
I was going to suggest that you simply convert the glow plugs to manual control with a momentary on push button, but I see you already have the issue resolved.
It's very easy to do, just remove the small ground wire from the GPR and run a circuit from that post to a push button switch, then to ground.
You now have manual control of your glow plugs.
If you don't want a code, just put a resister on the line from the PCM that matches the resistance of the GPR and run the circuit through that resister to ground.
The PCM won't know the difference.
yea, I have thought about doing the manual switch, but its nice to be able to hit the remote start when its cold out and have the glowplugs come on by themselves. I live in North Dakota its cold a lot of the year lol.
