I'm looking for a replacement longblock for my '65 Mustang. I'm interested in a 351. 5.8s from the mid eighties F and E series seem to be the most common around here. There are plenty of F150s and Econolines from about 75-89 around here, ripe for the picking! My question is, are there any signifigant changes to the 5.8/351 from the mid seventies through about 89? What year did the 5.8 go to a roller cam setup? Will the timing chain cover from my '65 vintage 289 bolt up? I know the intake manifold is 351 specific, but I think all the rest of my accessories will bolt up, including my C4 automatic, correct? Any thoughts on this swap?
I would recommend that you go with a 302/5.0 out of a fox body Mustang or similar roller block. Thats what I have in my 65. The 351 is a tighter fit and will potentially make changing spark plugs a pain. Also, the added weight in the front of the car will make it not handle as well.
If you are going to build something with some good power, I would recommend 1 peice export brace, monte carlo bar, and subframe connectors.
Take a look at these forums if you havent already.
