What are good things to do on a 1994 F-150 XLT 4.9L 4X4 to increase performance, better gas mileage, and anything else like accessories, or new filter or upgrade or anything like that.
and maybe replace a part that would make a difference. thought it be a good thread so people can talk together and help all the FTE members to improve there trucks performance
Word on the street is that the best intake setup for these trucks is a regular paper filter element with the 300 or 460 upper intake tube/snorkel.
Open filters under the hood will cause you to pull in a warmer intake charge, however a lot of the newer K&N systems for mass air have a heat shield that somewhat separates the filter from the rest of the engine. Also, if you over oil these filters when you clean them, the oil can gut sucked from the filter and cause problems on MAF trucks.
I don't think the K&N's are all bad, but they have been shown to allow more dirt though than a paper element, and they seem to clog faster.

Agreed!
Don't waste your money on KN. I had a drop in replacement one years ago and it did nothing. I also had the FIPK setup and actually got worse fuel economy. That just sucks in hot air anyway.
KN does not filter as well anyway. Besides that the hassle of cleaning, drying, oiling etc. Is not worth fooling with. I also noticed that there are older KNs that have been washed several times seem to deform or rip if you look at them closely.
Most of the turbo diesel guys I know want nothing to do with KN.
Do not use any spark plug besides Motorcraft or Autolite. The E3 will do nothing. They are all hype just like the other snake oil. Also full synthetics won't gain you much. If its a higher mileage engine definitely do not switch to synthetic. Fresh fluids would be a good idea though. Don't have the transmission flushed though, just change the filter.
Your best bet for better performance and fuel economy is doing this and a complete tune up with good parts and all new filters as well as fluids. A good flowing single exhaust will help as well. You can run a single in dual out muffler if you want duals. If you do exhaust get a straight through muffler not a chambered one.
Stay away from chips, CAIs, throttle body spacers etc. They will not gain you anything.
Here is a free one, make sure your tires are properly inflated.

^^^^^ I totally agree. Basic routine preventative maintenance using high quality off the shelf parts is your best bet.
hahaha im sure there is someone with a link someplace showing the results from a test someone done somwhere in a lab near area 51....... somthing like it was 17k per test to throw some dirt on a filter....
K&N are high flow filters and arent going to catch all of the dirt..... but they will catch the big stuff thats going to due the damage
Yep on a stock truck they are not going to make much difference , but on a high performance truck that needs alot of air you need a HP filter even if it dosn't filter as good , thats just the way it is ...Lew
