2001 5.4 running rough
possible. Have 01 250 5.4 with 154,000. I bought it used and have no idea what has been done to it, but I think they took decent care of it. I have been driving it a little every weekend and it has been running great. I let it set for the last 3 weeks and now it is running very rough. It had about 1/2 a tank of gas and i am wondering if it build condensation or something. I changed the fuel filter myself and it didn't seem to change anything. There is no check engine light on and the only pattern I can figure out is that it is most noticeable less than 2000 RPM(s). This is a weekend truck and i really don't want to start dropping any more money into than I have to. I want to work toward a complete tune up and things like that, just right now trying to see what I can do myself to improve the situation. My skill level is about medium. Thanks in advance. Please ask me questions if this makes no sense.
Have you washed the engine lately or drove through deep water or big puddles?
If you have then you might want to check the plug holes/tunnels for moisture.
Take each coil off one at a time and carefully check for even the slightest signs of moisture on the plug boots (the long rubber boots will pull out with the coils). Try to also look into each plug hole/tunnel for signs of moisture.
If you see ANY signs of moisture (even if trace amounts) blow the holes out with a compressor and blower tip and clean up the boots.
Even if you find no signs of moisture it's a good time clean the plug holes and boots and add some fresh dielectric grease to the bottom of the boot sleeves and the top of the boots where they seat to the head.

Also...
Do you notice any ticking sounds at idle or anything abnormal?
If yes, this indicates that you have a blown spark plug.
Literally......it has blown right out of the hole or loosened.
(Common happening with all modular Fords with 2V heads. This was Fords gift to their customers from the engineers.)
Otherwise, you can also go over to Autozone and have them
run a diagnostic check for free. They will print you out a
general description of the problem and you can go from there.
Most of the time though, this problem is usually caused by a
faulty coil on the plug, dirty intake sensors, or a dirty injector.
In that order of likeliness.
tuneup as soon as possible.
Air & fuel filters, PCV valve, oil and filter, (replace all of your
sensors at this mileage level)O2 & other maintenance ones,
coolant, thermostat, belts, hoses, etc.
All replaced and good to go. Didnt know a thing about blown plugs at the time. Take care and follow all torque specs and use anti-sieze on the threads.
