1) Every time I slip the clutch at all I get that beautiful odor of burning clutch. I'm talking barely slipping the clutch like when you are easing over a slippery spot in the snow. Seems odd to me that it would burn up so easily.
2) I also get a little noise when starting out in first gear.
3) The shifter is VERY wobbly. I can move it in about a 3+ inch circle while still in gear. Shifts easily enough but it wobbles like crazy.
4) Finally, I can shift into gear without using the clutch. I didn't try that while the truck was on, I only figured it out while it was sitting.
Anyway... I think the clutch was recently done before I bought the truck. What's the deal? Is it clutch or new tranny time? Or am I just an overly sensitive kind of guy??
I'm no tranny expert, but i did have to deal with two screwed up mazda's in my 88.
First tranny I might have broke. I was goofing around throwing the shifter back and forth in nuetral at a stop sign one day and when I went to shift again, it gave symptoms like you are describing. There was a lot of play when in gear and the gears didn't line up right. I wasn't sure how to fix it and since it was my beater truck i said **** it and let it go. Wasn't too long after that I started losing gears. I don't know if the issues are related or not. In my experience, once the tranny starts giving you trouble it's on it's way out.
I don't have any information on the clutch issue, but it sounds like a malfunctioning pressure plate to me. That would also require removal of your tranny.

This is normal. The clutch just disconnects power input and rotation from the engine to the transmission. With the engine off, there is neither power input or rotation, so you can row through the gears without pressing the clutch.
If the clutch is new, it could be still in the process of bedding in, causing the smell you describe. The wobbly handle is probably between the handle and the gearbox if the transmission still shifts properly. Does the noise in first go away as you increase speed?
My dad's Mazda transmission makes noise when the engine is lugging at low rpm. This is normal, my ZF does it too. I don't have any experience with the shifter on the Mazda transmission, so I'm not sure how to fix the shifter.
The noise only occurs during the initial start ad goes away when the truck gets rolling a bit.
Any way to fix the wobbly shifter?
The wobbly shifter COULD BE due to the shifter lever mounting bolt not installed properly. There is a special bolt, flat and tapered on one side with threads on both sides for removal and installation. Located below the shifter boot. Thirty some dollars from Ford. I had to buy a new bolt for my '88, just couldn't get the old one installed properly.
The slipping smelly clutch, I'd say just baby it along and it may last a while. If a new one was just installed, something wasn't done right.
The loose shifter could be the bolt (stud really), but most likely it's the nylon bushings worn out that support the shifter. I got a kit off ebay not long ago which had the bushings, pins and top cover and screws, around $20.00.
If the original clutch was really bad and the flywheel wasn't resurfaced, the new one could be going prematurely.
