hard starter
I have to give it gas and then it runs for 2 seconds and dies. It always starts and keeps running on the third try though. However, it runs at about twice the RPM's that it should for about 15 mins until it warms up. Then, the RPM's back off to a normal idle. But, when I shut it off, it continues to cough and wheeze for a couple of secs and then finally sighs to a quit. If I start it up immediately after that, I have no problems starting or shutting down. I only have this problem once it sits for about 3-4 hours. I've had this problem for about 3 months. I replaced the fuel pump, but that didn't help. Changed the plugs about 6 months ago. Any ideas as to what might be causing this problem?

Do you see that little rod coming from the linkage to the front of the carb ,then it has a little arm on it?
Behind that is the key to your success.
When you rebuild a carb that accelerator pump is included.
You can also try and Find just that part.
You might end up having to re-build the carb though,4 years is along time for a carb to sit.
Check the choke to be sure it is working ok. I imagine you need it where you are. Run on after shutting down can be caused by too fast an idle speed. Also you might try some premium gas.
I hadn't thought about it before, but, everytime I fill up, I put a bottle of "Heet" in the tank. Heet is a gasline antifreeze additive. I don't even know if they sell it in the lower 48. A lot of people use it up here to help keep condensation out of the tank. Do you think that might be a problem? Of course, if Bentkey is having the same problem...there goes that idea. I just filled up 2 days ago, so I won't know if the Heet is causing the problem for another week or so.
Another possibility. The rubber gasket on my gas cap is getting kind of dry and cracked. I think I remember someone telling me that you have to have a good seal on the gas cap or it won't draw fuel correctly. But that might just be on fuel injected engines. I'm not sure. Has anybody every heard this before?
