Transplanting a 6.9 IDI into a Slick?
What motor mounts/perches did you use for your setup?
Will the Ford factory 460 ones work as a direct bolt up?
Will the C-6 (from an 85 F-350 dually) behind my 460 mate to the 6.9
IDI?
Thanks for the input!
C6's are available but a 460 one or any gas motor will not bolt up.
Are you working on a two wheel drive or a four wheel. I have a 78 1/2 ton 4x I would like to use one in. I think with the right gears it would be pretty peppy and get close to 25 mpg. One would work sweet in a slick.
I did a lot of modifications to her, I'll list them below. They are all Ford and are all bolt up solutions, as I do not know how to fabricate.
I think the proposed donor truck is a stick but I prefer an automatic - hip arthritis you know.
I would really like an IDI project, if I can make it work, to be a drop-in solution. Bolt it up, drop it in, wire it up, change fuel in the tank and go. Sorta like an Eddie Rabbit song, don'tcha know.
Any ideas or insight I would greatly welcome.
Here it is: Here is my current setup:
'86 460 bored 60 over with stock '86 heads - no porting
'78 F-250 460 engine perches and mounts
'69 straight up cam gears, Cloyes double roller with RV type cam
Edelbrock Performer (not RPM) intake and 1470 750 CFM carb on a 1" phenolic spacer
'76 Duraspark II ignition
Stock aftermarket manifolds with a 2 1/2 inch dual exhaust, Flowmasters, copper gaskets
'93 serpentine belt brackets and pulleys
'78 power steering pump, hoses with ’93 PS pulley
'76 power steering box
'76 power steering pitman arm
'76 steering linkage
'92 power steering cooler, mounted in the frame
'70 steering column
'76 radiator
'66 alternator with '93 serpentine pulley and fan
'86 water pump
'86 fan clutch with '77 7-blade fan
'83 C-6 from an '83 F-350 fifth wheeler, with '77 C-6 linkage (internal shift rod and kickdown)
2.75 rear end
'83 stock rear sump oil pan, with stock oil pump, pickup tube and dipstick (includes main bearing bolt with stud to hold pickup in place)
Includes '93 A/C compressor, but A/C is not installed. (Needed for the serpentine belts.)
'76 F-150 3-inch rear brakes
'72 rear axle shafts (for the larger rear brakes)
'76 F-150 front disk brakes with power brake booster and dual chamber master cylinder.
The only modifications I had to make were:
Fabricate an accelerator cable bracket by combining an FE one with a 385 one.
New driveshaft
Change the C-6 internal shift linkage from a ’68 – ’79 C-6
Add the '76 brake line stands for the front disc brake hoses
Relocate the pedal linkage hole in the brake pushrod
Add a bracket for the brake light switch, and connect the original brake wiring back to it
I'm a Slick guy too, I'm going to like you for sure. Slick's and IDI's are a great combination.
What are you intending to use this truck for with a diesel?
In stock form, there's no turbo and you're going to be disappointed after driving a hot rod with a worked 460.
If you add a turbo and do some other work, it'll be powerful, but it's nothing like a big block.
I went from a 352/NP435 into a 6.9/T19 and a year later I still get aggrivated with how slow this IDI is. It's a great engine, but you just can't compare to a big block.
The area the IDI shines in is towing or moving heavy loads. It doesn't throw you back in the seat like a big block (I cracked my back window with my head in my big block). But it is simple, efficient, and easy to service. It'll tow forever!
Do you still have the fuel tank behind the seat or did you locate one on the frame rail? Diesel's require a sending unit with a return line. Maybe you could join a diesel sending unit with the original '66 sending unit and make one that would work?
The shortbed before it was a plaim manilla 240 3 spd but had zero rust,so it got.
built 429 cj from a 71 torino.
C6 from a 77 F150
master cylinder and booster from a 77 and prop valve.
I beams and disc from a 78 I belive
ac from a 77 F150 and an underdash unit from either a toyota or masda. The unit only stuck down a little over an inch under the dash.
Power windows from a 79 Tbird.
Wide brake pedal from a 77.
Installed the cruise from a 77 but never got it lined out.
tilt steering column from a 78.
There is probably more but I sold that one 23 years ago. lol bad mistake.
If you run big duals I think you will be suprised how well the idi will perform, that old highboy was na and would up to 76 mph run with most pickups.
I dont think there will be any stock perches that will work and may need some modification to your crossmember.
If I was going to use an auto in the slick, I would find a E40D for it.
