Can someone please tell me the signs of a failing vacuum pump. My wife recently heard a high pitched squeal coming from the engine. I have severely degraded hearing above 5 khz. I took the serpentine belt off to check all the pulleys and water pump and found the vacuum pump almost locked up. Upon removal, the back side not visible when installed was obliterated. I on my own saw nothing on the dash or noticed anything wrong while driving. If it wasn't for my wife hearing the squeal I could've had a breakdown on the road. What does the vacuum pump do for my 7.3 stroker? Thx .

When mine died completely it was preceded by an occasional but common high pitched squeal. I hunted around for the sound but couldn't isolate it other than near the pump. Other than the squeal there was no loss of braking power or cabin environmental controls.
Then one day driving home, stopped at the mail box, jumped back in to finish the drive home and no power boost on the brakes. Pump went from working but occasionally squealing to totally dead.
Sounds like we got fairly lucky and caught it before any failures started taking place. I thought for some reason, the vacuum pump may have helped with timing in some way? Thankyou, for the the feedback.
