I pull a trailer with my 53,and it is a 6cylinder and 3 speed. No problem. All stock.
You just have to be careful, and go slow. The problem is when you drive too fast and then try to slow down or stop.
With original brakes.....it can be scary. I figure if they handled it back in the 50s....I can handle it now.
I just don't go into many big cities......crazy drivers trying to go around you....and don't want to drive the speed limit.
I've pulled a 5th wheel with my 54 F250 with a 460 and C6. It was OK for short trips, but after one trip 7 or 8 years ago of about 100 miles it was time to look for a SD diesel. The 5th wheel is an older one and the truck was scary above 50 mph due to the short wheel base for a 3/4 ton compared to newer trucks. Even with the kingpin hitch slightly ahead of the rear axle as recommended, it was light on the front and and squirrelly to drive. Without a heavy load the truck drives great to 70 mph with the original straight axle.
Julie, Good thing Old Red has 4 speeds because you are going to need the first 3 most of the time. LOL. Is that how you will show up at the MN Camping GTG?
