ranger spring help

I,m in the middle of replaceing the spring hangers on my 94 ranger extended cab and have a spring swap question. I have already gone through the broken spring mess and added an extra leaf several years ago. I have been following the threads consirning an explorer spring swap. Should I consider this mod? This truck is now a beater work truck. Would adding another leaf to the stack be a better mod to increase my useful load?

I would not think the Explorer springs would have as much weight carrying capacity as Ranger springs. Explorers are not designed to carry 1200-1500 pounds in the rear cargo area. Also Explorer springs have more arch and the axle is mounted above the springs rather under the springs like on Ranger.

Hammerfore, the better mod would be to add a spring or two to each side of the springs you have, to increase your load capability. As you may already know from before, the additional springs may raise the truck slightly just because there are more of them and they don't compress as easily with just the empty weight of the truck on them. Of course it will make the truck ride more harshly. But it will handle the loads better when you want it to as well. I added three extra leaves to each side of my 90 Supercab and I never had any trouble handling any loads I needed to carry, either in the bed or on the hitch.

thanks for the help

Thanks for the quick reply. Now I just have to get the old hangers of the springs. Getting them off the frame was a peice of cake compared to this!

Before you do anything to your springs, have you considered adding an aftermarket air system to give you more load capacity without changing the ride height or adding harshness? Wouldn't that be way more fun than playing around with springs and shackles? If you feel comfortable undertaking such a project, PM me and I'll give you some suggestions to save money over what's available out there.

A third option would be spring loaded rear shocks. They still make them for the Ranger!

Replacing saggy Bronco II / Ranger leafs with Explorer Leafs

The 4dr 92 5spd Explorer I parted out has a 500lb HIGHER GVRW then my 91 4.0L 5spd Ranger super cab.....

I can not remember what spring place I saw the rate comparison side by side but the Ranger has every spring a different rate while the Explorer main leaf is one rate and the other three are the same 350 ppi I think.

here...they have the rates just look up the Explorer leafs http://www.autoandtrucksprings.com/p...9QZuaAH9b035r4
