My Dad had an camper special, as far as a F100 or an F250 I do not recall. it was an white over aqua and it had a different set of gauges then the ones in my F250. I do remember that the bumper On the passenger side of the box was a compartment that my dad kept items in. I could not locate a truck like this so,
I bought what I feel is the next best thing. My thanks go out to ND, CS65, garbz2, e-tek any every one else one this site, for the anwsers to my questions. My memory hauler has 4 feet of snow around her itchin to get out on the road. please pardon my bable. hope I can utlize everyones wisdom here I really do not have the talent of body work. Engine work I think I can do ....

 

let me be the first for congratulating on getting your truck. and too bad you couldnt get one like your dads.

 

The cool thing is you got memories of your dad's old trucks; my dad always had nova's & camero's in the 60's; didn't get our first truck until 1972 f100.

My dad had a Ford truck, it was even a slick('65 I think, I remember it still had a straight axle the year the twin I beams came out).
My best memory of that truck was him trying to tow our 16' travel trailer over Sonora Pass one summer.
At the bottom of the pass is a sign saying "No House Trailers". My dad said, "It's only 16', that's not a house trailer."
Truck was a 6 cyl/3sp. Got somewhere near the top of the pass(9k feet or more)when she just wouldn't pull any more. My memory is of traffic backing up behind us while we waited for the tow truck to help us over the top.

 

Sounds like I might re-think this summers project of rebuilding a '64 'Little Dipper' 16 footer I found to tow behind by '64 (six and a 3-speed). I'm already at 6k feet in the Rockies. Maybe I'll just stick to the local shows and parades.

 

Ya know that those clusters with two extra gages are an easy swap to your truck and installing a styleside bed with a tool box is also really easy. Add a nice bumper and you basically have your camper special. Likley someone would trade for the flat bed you currently have. Just rambling but the good thing about these old Fords is that they can be built any way you want them.

 

Lon, over the years my dad and I discussed it, and he always felt that if the truck had had the 4 speed we'd have been ok. A few years later we pulled a 24' Boles Aero over the same pass with a Toyota Land Cruiser(old style, jeep looking one)with no problems. Again a 6 cyl and 3 speed, but he was ready to go to low range if he had to.

I bought an 18' Scotty Hilander this summer and I plan on pulling it with my truck after it's re-done. Of course, I'm in the middle of a 302/C6 conversion on the truck right now. Got a complete 4 speed, 6 cyl bell housing and all if you want to come to Arkansas and get it.

 

Thanks for the generous offer on the bell housing and tranny, but it's quite a trek to Arkansas from here in central Utah. Plus, I could only get two of the five wives to give me permission and I have to have a majority. Thanks again, (I'm only kidding about the five wives, I'd have to be wearing a cape and tights before I'd tackle polygamy).

You fellows are lucky to have those memories of these trucks.

My dad bought an 89 dodge new in 90.I remember riding with him and my sis in it when it was new.I would not trade that memory for anything(except the being a dodge).This past christmas dad gave me the old dodge to drive to replace my 01 supercrew when it sells.The dodge has been in the back field for about 8 years now.I do have it going 1k$ later in parts plus the trans I had build previously for dad but not installed.I drove it for the first time yesterday down the road.That ride was so good,just like being 12 again!

I just hope my first ride in the 64 is as good as my 65 was when I bought it in high school.

My Dad had a 61 chev 4x4.....his friend's had the slicks. Tom had a 65 camper special and Sam had wrong bed 4x4, dont remember the year, i think it was a 63.

It really made me mad when my Dad sold that chevy right before i turned 15. i learned how to drive in it. but, he rolled it over in the desert anyways with 6 of us kids in the back of it and 3 adults in the front. only person hurt was my Dad, he got drenched with gas getting out! glad nobody was smoking!

 

Yea.Why do dads do that? Mine had a 52 chevy 5 window truck.It sat next to the house for As long as I could remember....We were going to fix her up for me to drive BUT when I was 13 dad sold it to a guy for parts!Lousy!

 

one of my buddies was given a 73 Nova by his Dad, it was his dad's first car. it needed a few thigs and hadn't been run in years. but then one day he came home to find his car gone, since my buddies dad only verbally said it was his and the title was in his dad's name still, he sold it for some extra cash...

 

its funny how old trucks conjure up memories...and I've got tons.....My buddies 1st truck was a red 61 unibody and mine was a 49 F1 with the flathead V8. Brad's 61 got tons of miles on it even though the top speed on that truck was about 59 mph. The old I6 sounded like an old tractor as we cruised the old back roads in north georgia. One time the transmission got stuck in 1st gear after we got through scratching off in some gravel. It took us an hour to get home in 1st gear that night. Brad was killed about 5 years ago when a drunk driver rear ended his 71 Dodge Charger while he was stopped at a light. Everytime I sit in the Cab of my 64 F100 project I think about cruising after school
