I own a 97 150 w a 5.4l. about a month ago I had my truck serviced (new plugs fuel filter) and I am having an ignition problem. when cold it runs fine, but after a while it will start to miss, usually when I get on it(mash accelerator). when stopped the rpms will drop to 450 or so, and it runs sluggish after that. My question is does this sound like a coil pack going out or am I having a problem w the fuel pump? I had a hyperteck programmer, and put it back in stock program, and when it said to turn on ignition I heard gurgling in the fuel tank which was over half full. is this normal, I have never heard the noise before. should I start w testing the fuel pressure, or start w the coils? my truck is pushing 180000, so I know my coil packs are old, but dont want to spend the money replacing all of them...if its an option. also, no check engine light, but when I put it back in stock program it read a few codes which I cant remember, but will only take a second to get again..if its still coding..P1000 is what it read...
I agree with you.I would run the codes. then I would do a fuel pressure test. I think p1000 means the truck has not gone thru its drive cycle. it should go away . I also would do the other mantaince such as airfilter, clean iac, clean throttle body, clean maf, , etc,
brake parts cleaner for the MAF? I know my filter is clean, thats why im wondering if its ignition..like it drops a cylinder, like the wire shorts out a second. I had someone check the coils when I paid him to do the plugs(no way I was fighting those). He didnt seem worried. I wonder if they have an instrument at autozone to test the coils.....im def. going to do a little sensor cleaning, ill ask there about what cleaner to use, and I might as well test the pressure while im at it...seems like another code would come up if it was something else

Did the issue develop after the plugs were changed ...........I would buy MAF cleaner its in a spray can about $7. I would also buy throttle body cleaner not carb cleaner for the TB. AZ should be able to check your coils. I would think if you had a serious misfire you would get a code. I would check the fuel pressure first. if you live near a harbor freight you can get one cheap.
I did plugs and wires on mine recently and had the same problem. I had the codes checked and it was the DPFE sensor. Thinking it was to much of a coincidence that it would occur right after I changed wires I pulled the TB cover and looked at the DPFE. One of the vacuum lines was disconnected. Reconnected and all is fine. Hope that helps.
no, I know the plugs were the origional ones that miracously(spell check) survived 170,000 miles. There was virtually nothing left of them, basically sparking from the outside of plug. It started to run bad when id accelerate or go up a hill, and i knew it was time to fork over two fifty to have them replaced. I know the 5.4 plugs are in the Guiness Book of World Records for being the most time consuming, and most extensions/wabbles on a wrench category, so I paid someone who could do it in a day. It didnt really correct the ignition problem, and its once the engine warms up. Im not sure if the engine is getting small bursts of no fuel(fuel pump) or a coil going out. 170,000 miles and this is the first time i have had a problem with the truck. No leaks, no smoke, no knocks(except the engine lash when its cold). no check engine light on to point a finger.
I would check for codes even if the cel is off. I would reread the posts and do what the suggestions say. sounds like the truck has had limited maintenance over it life.
It sounds to me like you a Coil going bad. Mine usually does this for up to a month sometimes before it will set a code. Once it does it is easy to know which coil in which cylinder is bad. But it is a big head ache until it sets the code.
I drive a 2002 F-150 4.6 L w/77,000 miles. I have replaced 3 coils over the past 2 years. After replacing the third coil I decided to replace the rest of them. It runs like a new truck now....

I dont own any of these trucks but I think the 2002 has cop's right? then 97 has coilpacks and wores right?
