I have a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT and i was gunna do upper and lower ball joints on both sides. i was just woundering how hard it is gunna be am i gunna be killing my self or what. Thanks in advance
It will take you about 5 hours total if you've never done it. Most auto parts places will loan out a ball joint tool kit. Spend a bit more and get good quality parts, not second line, white box crap. I've used both and I can assure you you'll be wasting your time with lower quality products.
We carry the ball joints for that application, wasn't sure if you were checking on prices, here's a link to them on our site if you would like to check them out.
I did the lower ball joints and brakes (front and back) on my Son's 98 Explorer 2WD. Shop said uppers, lowers and brakes needed to be replaced and quoted 1500.00 for parts and labor. We replaced the lowers with MOOG parts and replaced the boots on the upper ball joints and tie rod ends with new grease. (they were tight and showed very little wear), repacked the wheel bearings and replaced the front and back with ceramic pads. It took us 6 hours and 250.00.
not a bad job if u have a ball joint press for lower ball joint ,upper ball joint u have to replace the whole control arm assembly because thats the only way u can buy it,u have to get the front end alliament when your done
When I got the ball joints from Advance Auto I got the ball joint press they rent for free (if you bring back all of the pieces) Press works well for the install but found the 2 lb hammer works the best for pounding them out once the snap ring is removed. Haven't taken the car in for an alignment yet but will soon. I would like to know just how much the geometry changes when you change a single fixed point, like a ball joint, if the alignment was correct before the change.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
