I'm new to the forum and a novice mechanic. I just purchased my first F150, 4.6L V8, 55,600 Miles. It intermittently has a rough idle and only seems to be when the engine is hot. I've had engine and tranny mechanics look it. The spark plugs have been inspected and are within an acceptable range. The throttle body has been cleaned. There are no trouble codes of any kind. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can check next?
First thing I would check/change if you haven't already is the fuel filter. My 5.4 had the same problem and I bench cleaned the TB and quit running certain brand of gas and now it runs smooth as silk.
Forgot to mention you might wanna clean you MAF also. I did that when I bench cleaned my TB.
Thanks for the reply. What does MAF stand for? Is it the Air Filter? I did just change that and it was dirty but didn't look too bad. It might take me a couple weeks to get time, but I'll change the filter and post back my results.
There are two tiny torx screws holding the MAF on. Just pull the plug and take the two screws out and it will slide right out. You can buy MAF cleaner at your local parts store in a aerosol can. Just spray it and replace.

Be careful when cleaning the MAF sensor as it consist of very tiny wires... Don't touch it, just spray the cleaner on it...
Just want to say that my truck was having idle problems when in drive at a stop and cleaning the MAF sensor made all the difference. When I came to a stop the RPM's would dip below 400 and when I was backing it would sometimes die. After cleaning the MAF sensor my RPM's never dip below 500 and the truck runs a lot smoother. I had no idea how important it was to keep the MAF sensor clean. Just wanted to share this for anyone who has idle issues or never thought about cleaning the MAF sensor. I do have a K&N air filter in there and I know the oil from that doesn't help anything but the truck has over 85k on it and I've had it since 30k.
Mine has been doing the same thing. When I took it to the dealer it ran codes for misfires and throttle body. They changed the plugs, to the toon of $750 and cleaned the TB. The idel is still poor, but it no longer stalls. When a TB goes bad, which part is bad? Is it the body or is it the electronic part that goes bad? I have found BBK TB for about $300, but the electroic part is not on the unit. Ford wants $400 for a new TB installed. My question is should I buy the unit without the electronic part or should I just get one from the dealer?
