Shifter issues

Transmission shifter issues

Need some help.I backed out of the driveway and when I shifted to Drive it would not pull. Shifted back to reverse and it moved, back to Drive and it moved but it now goes forward in any shifter position except park. Park holds and comes out just like normal. The shifter indicator moves like it's working but it's not. No grinding or scrubbing noises. Eased back into the driveway. Any thoughts or ideas appreciated. I have not made any close examinations yet. My shop is my gravel driveway, it has rained the last couple of days, it's 30 degrees outside and it's dark. I will check it over tomorrow but thought I would ask in case anyone can tell me what to look for. First post was in the Excursion forum and no response so I am trying here.

m, but Thanks

well I would start with the obvious and check the trans fluid. Not sure what else it could be. Does the SCT read any codes? Maybe that would give you a clue.

Bad news. The problem is not outside the transmission unless it is electrical. Fluid level is good and clean looking. All the fasteners and clips are in place. Move the shift lever and it moves the cable which moves the rod going into the transmission just like it should. So I guess it is inside the transmission and the next step is pull the transmission pan and take a look. If anyone has a diagram or bottom view picture of the guts, please let me know. I will keep you posted.

is it under warranty? If so I would be called the ford roadside assistance and have it towed. Be sure to request a flatbed.

Might be as simple as a bad TCM.

From what you are describing it is hard for me to tell if the shifter is actually engaging the trans.... These trucks have a very common problem with the shifters under the dash (I bought an f150 that had the problem when I got it and mine had the same prob a few months ago). There are two small bolts (torques I believe) under the dash that hold the actual shifter linkage into the steering column (or what ever it attaches to??). These bolts back out over time and sometimes they can both just fall out. It often causes weird problems with the shifter not working. When I had it on the 150 I did some research and eventually came up with a good side that I found useing google that had good pics and explanations of the prob. (just looked, cant find it now).

In the f-150 I ended up looking up at the shifter and one bolt was missing, found the other in the pile of dirt on the carpet. When It happened in my superduty, I think one bolt had been out for a while and I didn't feel a problem until the other started coming loose. I knew there was a prob but didn't do anything until the bolt completely fell out and I had no shifter. Turns out, I had found the first bolt about a month before and put it in my change tray not knowing what it was.

If you dont have a pic of what im talking about its very difficult to find the bolts or area they should be. I know this is a long shot and the other guys seem to think its a trans problem, but maybe you should check it out before thinking its the trans....

EDIT: Might not be too much help, but this is the bolt you are looking for either on the floor (if it fell out) or a plate with two of them up under the dash

Thanks for responding

04, 195,xxx miles. No warranty.

Had my wife shift through the gears while I was underneath. She had her chance. LOL The shift arm attached to the transmission moved 4-6 inches and turned the rod going into the side of the transmission with no slip. That is why I think it is internal. C'est la vie. Still could use a diagram or bottom view.

Update

Scanned the Excursion. No engine DTC, No Transmission DTC. Body codes U1058, U1059, U1073, U1262, U1027 and B1352. I know the codes short definition. What I don't understand is what to do about them or if they have any connection to my tranmission problems.
