In addition...the engine/trans/axles are working much harder to get your 44s TO 60mph with 3.55 gears. You are most likely burning MORE gas by running higher gears than you are saving.
I also highly doubt your truck is getting 19mpg. My 79 F150 300-6 with the stock 1bbl carb, np435, 3.50 gears and 33s got between 18-20mpg on the highway. I rebuilt it with a 4bbl carb/intake and a few other goodies and now I get around 14 or so with the same setup.
Have to keep in mind that those old Monster Mudders really don't run true to size, and aren't the grippiest of tire, so the amount of hp and gear required to turn them is lessened, but still, 3.55's with 44's of any sort must be painful.
I'd like to have 4.88's with the 38.5's on my truck, will be 5.13's and a doubler with 44's when it does happen...
the dana 60s i bought came with 4:10s so i think im just gonna keep those in them for right now, you think i will do fine on that? i just can afford all the quite yet but i plan to run 4:56s
as I was telling Kirby, youll burn more gas getting up to speed (lets just say 60mph) with 4.10 or 4.56s than you'll save once you get there and hold speed a while. 5.13/5.38s would be a great gear for 44s and will actually calculate to a similar gear ratio as factory with factory tires. The weight and rotating resistance of the 44s is going to kill gas mileage regardless of gear ratio. 19mpg with a 300-6 is just rediculous. Id say you'd be lucky if you got anything over 10mpg. I got 12mpg from a rather mild 460/C6 4.56/38.5s and I felt that was extremely good.
